Ehm, I’m not surprised. I need loads of them when doing custom web sites and I especially need loads of them while making designs for applications. And, I decided a while ago, that creating them by my self is just not worth it. The time and effort that is required to make a good icon set, especially at tight deadlines and difficult customers can never be repaid.
So, I decided that the best thing to do is to go out there on the net and find some good design companies that offer icons for sale. And the guys at icongalore.com are just what I needed. First, they offer really high quality icons, second they have really huge selection of them, probably the largest selection of Icons on the Internet from what I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot) and these come in many different sizes which is very important.
Then, in case you don’t really find what you were looking for (which is not likely - but still) they’ll make custom icon design at decent price.
Here is another good reason why I like those guys. Say, I have a “difficult” client. The one I know will insist on various changes before he accepts the final product. In addition, I especially anticipate requests for changes in icon design. So, what do I do? I download free icons from icongalore.com site, incorporate them into my design and show it to them. If they don’t like it, I just swap with another design and, by default they always like second version better. Then I buy the set and deliver the final application or web to client.
Also, if you don’t feel like buying set by set separately, you could make a pretty good deal right now as they offer all of their icons (8 categories, 6 formats, 3 states and 1511640 files included) for $349! I’d say, once you buy those, you won’t be needing any new icons for a long, long time.
