There are days when I feel completely obsolete. You know, like a VHS tape in the age of streaming. Just yesterday, I pondered my life’s achievements during my relatively short existence. Short, because when you look at the stars and think about the vast expanse of space and time, our lives are just a blip. Of course, my 14-year-old niece thinks I’ve lived an eternity. To her, anyone over 20 is practically a fossil.
Reflecting on My Creative Odyssey
So, what have I done with my life? Let’s see. From being a professional photographer to a quick action recorder, graphic designer, DTP team leader, small company co-owner, brand designer, client manager, journalist, web hosting service provider, web designer, motion designer, video maker, video editor, event manager, UX/UI designer, art director, senior web designer, e-commerce business owner, dropshipper, content creator, book author… phew! I hope I didn’t miss anything.
When I list these roles to someone who doesn’t know me, they often think I’m pulling their leg. It sounds like a lot, right? But honestly, I don’t find it unusual. People these days wear many hats, especially in the creative industry.
The Real Measure of Success
Despite my lengthy list of jobs and interests, I sometimes feel like I haven’t “made it” by my own standards. Do I have a lavish villa on a fancy coast? Nope. An expensive new car or two? Nah. A plane, a pool, or a wardrobe as big as a shopping mall? Not a chance.
But, hey, I’ve done a lot of creative work in my short lifetime. Most of it was pretty successful – not in millions $, but definitely better than most and enough to live comfortably.
The Joy of Creativity and Graphic Design
And then, I remind myself that I have enough. I can laugh, walk, and have fun with my family and friends (and cats, LOL). Thanks to my curiosity, diverse interests, stubbornness, and imagination, I continue to bring my ideas to life. Plus, with new technology emerging daily, the sky’s the limit for what I can achieve, right?
And, throughout all those years, I’ve mainly stuck with graphic design and photography. You could say that graphic design, right alongside photography, is my favorite field of work. But everything changes, including graphic design. This evolution is driven in part by AI image generators, the rise of augmented reality, and advancements in hardware.
Embracing the Future of Graphic Design
Graphic design is a dynamic field. One day you’re mastering Photoshop and Illustrator, and the next, you’re diving into augmented reality. The key is to stay curious and never stop learning. Here are a few tips to keep your creativity flowing and stay relevant in graphic design:
1. Stay Curious and Keep Learning
Never stop exploring new tools and techniques. Online courses, tutorials, and workshops are fantastic resources. The more you learn, the more versatile you become.
2. Experiment and Take Risks
Don’t be afraid to try new things. Some of the best designs come from stepping out of your comfort zone and experimenting with different styles and mediums.
3. Find Inspiration Everywhere
Look around you for inspiration. Nature, architecture, movies, and even everyday objects can spark great design ideas.
4. Network and Collaborate
Connect with other designers and creatives. Collaboration can lead to amazing projects and help you grow as a designer.
5. Keep Your Portfolio Updated
Showcase your best work in an online portfolio. Make sure it’s easy to navigate and highlights your skills and versatility.
